EAGLE OWL (Bubo bubo), a big owl inhabiting Europe and Asia, though only a straggler in most of Great Britain, and char acterized by its large size and the two tufts of feathers on the head. It is allied to the great horned owl (B. virginianus) of North America, but is larger. On the north-west coast of the United States the latter is represented by the dusky horned owl (B. v. saturatus), a very dark coloured race. The Arctic horned owl (B. v. subarcticus) is lighter coloured. In Lower California there is a small, light coloured race, the dwarf horned owl (B. v. elachistus).
