ECKMUHL or EGGMUHL, a village of Germany, in Ba varia, on the Grosse Laaber, 13m. S.E. of Regensburg by the rail way to Munich. It is famous as the scene of a battle fought here on April 2 2, 1809, between the French, Bavarians and Wurttem bergers under Napoleon, and the Austrians under the archduke Charles, which resulted in the defeat of the latter. Napoleon, in recognition of Marshal Davout's great share in the victory, con ferred on him the title of prince of Eckmuhl. For an account of this action and those of Abensberg and Landshut see NAPOLEONIC CAMPAIGNS.
