DOUVILLE, JEAN BAPTISTE French traveller, was born at Hambye (Manche), and is said to have been murdered in 1837 on the banks of the Sao Francisco in Brazil. He received the gold medal of the Paris Societe de Geographie for his Voyage au Congo (1832), but his account of his travels was proved to be fictitious and there is no evidence that he went beyond the coast. His narrative was based on unpublished Portuguese sources.
