DROBISCH, MORITZ WILHELM Ger man philosopher and mathematician, was born on Aug. 16, 1802, in Leipzig, where he became professor of mathematics in 1826, professor of philosophy in 1842 and where he died on Sept. 3o, 1896. He regards logic, whose business is the establishment of the general laws of thought, as a formal science independent of psychology. Religion is, for him, the expression of man's desire to escape from the impulses of nature to a divine being whose existence is better demonstrated by the ethical than the teleo logical proof. Drobisch's support of Herbart appears in his Beitrage zur Orientirung uber Herbart's System der Philosophie (1 834) and in Neue Darstellung der Logik (1836) . He also wrote Grundlehren der Religions-philosophie (1840) ; Empirische Psy chologie ; Quaestionum mat hematico-psychologicarum spec. I.–V. (1836-39) and t'ber die mathematische Bestimmung der musikalischen Intervalle (1846) .
