EDEN, SIR ASHLEY (1831-1887), Anglo-Indian offi cial and diplomatist, third son of Robert John Eden, third Lord Auckland and bishop of Bath and Wells, was born on Nov. 13, 1831, and entered the Indian civil service in 1852. In 1855 he helped to suppress the Santal rising, and from 186o to 1871 was secretary to the Bengal Government with an ex seat on the legislative council. In 1861 Eden negotiated, as political agent, a treaty with the raja of Sikkim. He was sent on a similar mission to Bhutan in 1863; but his demands were rejected and he was driven to accept an arrangement highly favourable to the Bhutias, which was repudi ated by the Indian Government. Eden was (1871) the first civilian governor of British Burma; in 1877 he became lieutenant-governor of Bengal. He returned to England on his appointment (1882) to the council of the secretary of State for India, of which he remained a member till his death on July 8, 1887.
