EATON, WYATT (1849-1896), American portrait and figure painter, was born at Philipsburg, Canada, on May 6, He was a pupil of the schools of the National Academy of De sign, New York, and in 1872 went to Paris, where he studied in the )?cole des Beaux-Arts under J. L. Gerome. He made the ac quaintance of J. F. Millet at Barbizon, and was also influenced by his friend Jules Bastien-Lepage. After his return to the United States in 1876 he became a teacher in Cooper institute and opened a studio in New York city. He was one of the or ganizers (and the first secretary) of the Society of American Artists. Among his portraits are those of William Cullen Bryant and Timothy Cole, the wood engraver ("The Man with the Vio lin"). Eaton died at Newport (R.I.), on June 7, 1896.
