ELAND, the largest of the South African antelopes (Tauro tragus oryx), the bull reaching a height of as much as 6ft. at the shoulder, and a length of over 9f t. ; a species akin to the kudu, but with horns present in both sexes, and their spiral much closer. There is a large dewlap, while old bulls have a thick fore lock. In the southern form the body is wholly pale fawn, but north of the Orange river the body is marked by narrow vertical white lines. In Senegambia the genus is represented by T. der bianus, a larger animal, with a dark neck; while in the Bahr-el Ghazal district there is a gigantic local race of this species.
