ESTELLA, a town of northern Spain, province of Navarre, on the left bank of the river Ega, 15 m. W.S.W. of Pamplona. Pop. Estella, built on the site of a former Roman settlement, contains several monasteries, three fine mediaeval churches, and a college which was formerly a university. It has cloth-making and leather industries and a considerable trade in fruit, wine and cattle. In 1928 a railway from Victoria was ap proaching completion. Situated amid mountains commanding the roads from Castile and Aragon, Estella occupies a position of con siderable strategic importance. It was long the headquarters of Don Carlos, who was proclaimed king here in 1833. In when driven from other places, the Carlists retired to Estella but on Feb. 16, 1876; those in the town finally surrendered. (For an account of the Carlist rising see SPAIN : History.)
