FILON, AUGUSTIN (1841-1916), French man of letters, son of the historian C. A. D. Filon (1800-75), was born in Paris in 1841. His father became professor of history at Douai, and eventually inspecteur d'academie in Paris ; his principal works were Histoire comparee de France et de l'Angleterre (1832), La Diplomatie f rancaise sous Louis XV. (1843), Histoire de la democratie athenienne (1854). Educated at the Ecole normale, Augustin Filon accompanied the Prince Imperial, as tutor, to England, where he remained for some years. He is the author of Guy Patin, sa vie, sa correspondance (1862) ; Nos grands-peres (1887) ; Prosper Merimee ; Sous la tyrannie (1900) ; Histoire de la litterature anglaise (1883) ; Le Theatre anglais (1896) ; L'Angleterre d'Edouard VII. (191 1) ; Souvenirs et docu ments (1912), relating to the Prince Imperial. He died at Croy don, England, on May 13, 1916.
