FALUN, a town of Sweden, capital of the district (lan) of Kopparberg, 153 m. N.W. of Stockholm by rail. Pop. (1928) 13,611. It is situated in difficult country near the western shore of lake Runn. Its famous copper mines have been worked since the 13th century. Their produce has gradually decreased since the 17th century, and is now unimportant, but various secondary products are still obtained. The mines belong to the Kopparberg Mining company, the oldest industrial corporation in Sweden, established before 1347. At present it has various industrial inter ests besides copper mining. Falun has railway rolling-stock fac tories and there are museums of mineralogy and geology and a school of mining.
