FAUNA, the feminine part ner (in later times explained as sister or wife) of Faunus (q.v.), and apparently identical origi nally with the Bona Dea. The term is used collectively for all the animals in any given geographical area or geological period, or for an enumeration of the same. It thus corresponds to the term "flora" in respect to plant life.
