FLINDER'S BARS, vertical bars of soft iron placed in front of or behind a ship's compass to compensate the disturbing mag netic effects due to the vertical soft iron parts of the ship. Other effects due to soft and hard iron in horizontal and vertical direc tions are also eliminated by bars or by spheres appropriately placed. (See COMPASS.)
