Johann Friedrich Gottlieb Falke


FALKE, JOHANN FRIEDRICH GOTTLIEB (1823 1876), German historian, was born at Ratzeburg on April lo, 1823. In 1856 he was appointed secretary of the German museum at Nuremberg, and in 1859 keeper of the manuscripts. With the aid of the manuscript collections in the museum he studied eco nomic history, and, with Johann H. Muller, established an his torical journal, Zeitschri f t f iir deutsche Kulturgeschichte (4 vols., Nuremberg, 1856-59). To this journal he contributed a his tory of German taxation and commerce. In 1862 he became sec retary and, later, keeper of the State archives at Dresden. His works include : Geschichte des deutschen Handels (2 vols., 1859 6o) ; Die Hansa als deutsche See- and Handels-macht (1862), and Geschichte des deutschen Zollwesens (1869). He died at Dresden on March 2, 1876.
