John Felton


FELTON, JOHN (c. 1595-1629), assassin of the 1st duke of Buckingham (q.v.), served in the expedition to Cadiz in 1625, and probably in the expedition to Re in 1627. He had personal as well as political grievances against Buckingham, whom he stabbed to death at an audience at Portsmouth on Aug. 23, 1628. He was tried on Nov. 27th, pleaded guilty and was hanged.
