Kirsten Flagstad


FLAGSTAD, KIRSTEN (1895 ), Norwegian opera and concert singer, was born in Hamar, Norway. At the age of eighteen she sang as Nuri in D'Albert's Tie (land. Her debut was so successful that she was sent to Stockholm for study. There fol lowed years in the Oslo and Gothenberg operas ; and then, with her marriage, came several years of retirement. In 1933 she sang at the Wagnerian festival in Bayreuth. This led to her engagement in the Metropolitan Opera, New York, and her debut there, Feb. 2, as Sieglinde in Die Walkure. Her success at the Metro politan, in London, and elsewhere has been remarkable, and she has been hailed as one of the great Wagnerian singers.
