GALLEN-KALLELA, AKSELI VALDEMAR (1865 1g31), Finnish painter, was born on April 26, 1865, at Pori. He established himself in 1884 in Paris. He is best known for his symbolic scenes from the Kalevala, for his landscapes, especially snow scenes, and for some admirable portraits, notably one of Gorki. He also executed work in black and white. His illustrations to Seitseman Veljestii, by Aleksis Kivi (1906-07), are well com posed and imaginative.
