FRANKLIN, EDWARD CURTIS Ameri can chemist, was born on Mar. 1, 1862, at Geary City, Kansas. He was educated at the University of Kansas (B.S., 1888; M.S., 1890) and Johns Hopkins university (Ph.D., 1894). He was as sistant in chemistry at the University of Kansas, 1889-94, asso ciate professor, and professor, 1899-1903. In 1903 he became associate professor of organic chemistry at Stanford university, Calif., and in 1906 was made professor. He served on the U.S. Assay Commission in 1907, in 1911-12 was professor at the hygienic laboratory of the U.S. Public Health Service and in 1918 was physical chemist of the Bureau of Standards. His chief researches were on the ammonia system of compounds, and liquid ammonia as an electrolytic solvent, and were published in the American Chemical Journal and Journal of the American Chemical Society.
