GALOIS, EVARISTE (1811-1832) , French mathematician, was born on Oct. 25, 181I, and killed in a duel on May 31, 1832. His principal work was on the resolubility of algebraic equations by radicals. To him is also due the notion of a group of substi tutions (see ALGEBRA; EQUATIONS, THEORY OF; also GROUPS).
