FRANKLIN, a city of central Indiana, U.S.A., tom. S. by E. of Indianapolis; the county seat of Johnson county. It is on Federal highway 31, and is served by the Big Four, the Pennsyl vania and the Interstate Public Service Company (electric) rail ways. The population was 4,909 in 1920; 1930 it was 5,682. It has sundry manufacturing industries, and is the seat of the State Masonic Home and of Franklin college (Baptist), founded in 1834. Franklin was settled about 1823 and was chartered as a city in 1861.
