FRESHWATER, a watering place in the Isle of Wight, Eng land, I 1 4 m. W. by S. of Newport by rail. Pop. 3,439. It is a scattered township lying on the peninsula west of the river Yar at the western extremity of the island. Freshwater Bay is separated from Alum bay on the west by the promontory between, with the group of detached rocks jutting from the sea known as the Needles, which are marked by a lighthouse. The cliffs are magnificent, rising 400-500 feet. Farringford house in the parish was the home of Alfred, Lord Tennyson, who is com memorated by a tablet in All Saints' church and by a great cross on High Down overlooking Freshwater Bay. There are golf links on the downs.
