FRIEDLAND, the name of seven towns in Germany. The most important is that in the extreme east of Mecklenburg, on the Miihlenteich, 35 m. N.E. of Strelitt by rail. Pop. (1933) 8,178. It possesses a Gothic church and has manufactures of iron, machinery, starch and sugar. Friedland was founded in 1 244 by the margraves John and Otto III. of Brandenburg.
