GALLARATE, a town of Lombardy, Italy, in the province of Varese, 25 m. N.W. of Milan by rail. Pop. (1931), 13,888 (town), 23,677 (commune). The town is of mediaeval origin. It is remarkable for its textile factories. Nearly a tenth of all Italian looms are to be found in and around it, producing annually from 70,000 to 8o,000 metres of cotton cloth. It is also the centre of the machine embroidery trade.
