FREYTAG, GEORG WILHELM German philologist, was born at Luneburg on Sept. 19, 1788. He studied Arabic, Persian and Turkish under De Sacy at Paris. In 1819 he became professor of oriental languages at Bonn. He died on Nov. 16, 1861. He edited two volumes of Arabic songs (Hamasae car mina, 1828-52) and three of Arabic proverbs (Arabum proverbia, 1838-43) ; and prepared the Lexicon Arabico-latinum (Halle, 1830-37, abridged ed., 1837).
