GACHARD, LOUIS PROSPER Belgian man of letters, was born in Paris on Mar. 12, 180o. He entered the administration of the royal archives in 1826, and was ap pointed director-general, a post which he held for 55 years. Gachard died at Brussels on Dec. 24, 1885. Among his best known works are: Don Carlos et Philippe II. (1867), Etudes et notices historiques concernant l'liistoire des Pays-Bas (1863) , Histoire de la Belgique au commencement du XVIIIe siecle (188o), Histoire politique et diplomatique de P. P. Ruben (1877), all published at Brussels.
