GALLIERA, MARIE, DUCHESS OF daughter of the Marquis di Brignola, a Sardinian, was born in Ghent and died in Paris on Dec. 9, 1888. She married the rail way contractor, Rafael Ferrari (d. 1876) upon whom the pope conferred the title of duke of Galliera. The duchess acquired notoriety by her colossal gifts of money to Paris and to Genoa. She bequeathed her palatial residence in Paris to the Austrian , Hungarian embassy.
