FRANKLAND, PERCY FARADAY ), Brit ish chemist, second son of Sir Edward Frankland, was born in London on Oct. 3, 1858. He was educated at the Royal School of Mines and at Wi.irzburg. In 1888 he was appointed professor of chemistry at Dundee, and then occupied the chair at Mason col lege, Birmingham, from 1893 to 1918. He was awarded the Davy medal of the Royal Society in 1919. His work in pure chemistry was concerned chiefly with optical activity and stereo-chemistry. He has also been interested in problems of water purification and sewage treatment, and made a special study of micro-organisms in connection with these matters. He has also worked on the subject of fermentation and gave the Pasteur Memorial lecture to the Chemical Society in 1897.

He has written a number of books including, Micro-organisms in Water (1894) and Life of Pasteur (1897).
