FRIDOLIN or FRIDOLD, SAINT (fl. 6th century), Irish missionary, is first mentioned by the monk Balther, at the begin ning of the I I th century, as belonging to a noble Irish family, and as having been the first missionary from Ireland to work among the Alamanni on the upper Rhine, where he founded many monas teries. Some historians regard Balther's account as pure invention.
