FURTWANGLER, WILHELM ), German conductor, was born in Berlin Jan. 25, 1886, the son of the archaeologist Adolf F urtwangler (1853-1907). He received his musical education in Munich from Beer-Walbrunn, Rheinberger and Schillings, and then acted as conductor at Zurich. Later he occupied similar positions at Strasbourg, Lubeck, Mannheim, Vienna and Frankfort-on-Main. In 1922, on the death of Arthur Nikisch, he became director of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and of the Gewandhaus concerts at Leipzig. His annual concerts in New York helped to internationalize his reputation. He di rected the Wiener Philharmonische Konzerte from 1927 to 1930, and in 1933 became first conductor of the Berlin State Opera.
