LIMNOCRYPTES.

Like "Gallinago"; shorter secondaries pointed; syrinx highly specialised (Pycraft).

Limnocryptes gallinula (L.). JACK SNIPE. Fr. Bec casine sourde ; Ger. Kleine Bekassine ; /fid. Frullino ; Swed. Halfenkel-Beckasin.

Smaller than "gallinago," distinguished by purple and green gloss on upper parts ; tail 1a feathers ; centre of crown blackish and on each side broad brownish yellow stripe. Bill

yellowish flesh with black tip. Legs and feet yellowish grey. Wing 1o8-115. Tarsus 23-25. Bill 39-43.

Preeds.--Lapland, Finland, N. Germany (few), Baltic Pro vinces, N. l'oland, Russia south to Perin and Orel ; also N. Asia. Migrates through Europe and Asia. Winters W. and S. Europe, N. Africa (Canaries to Egypt), also E. Africa, and S. Asia to China and Japan.
