QUETELET, LAMBERT Anor„PrrE JAcQuEs, a celebrated Belgian statistician and astronomer, was b. at Ghent, Feb. 22, 1796, and studied at the lyceum of his native city, where, in 1814, he became professor of mathematics. In 1819 he was appointed to the same chair at the Brussels atheneum; and in 1826 was chosen by king William I. to ameriutend the construction of the royal observatory in the capital, of which lie became director in 1828. In 1836 he was made professor of astronomy and geodesy at the Brussels military school. Elected a member of the Belgian royal academy in 1820, he became perpetual secretary in 1834. Quetelet was besiues a corresponding member of the institut de France and of the royal society of London. Among his numerous and valuable writiugs are: Astronomic Elemeutaire (Par. 1826; 4th ed. Brux. 1848); Recherches sir la Population, les Prisons, lea Depots de Mendicite, etc., dans le Royaume des
Pays- flax (Brux. 1827); Recherches sue la Reproduction et la Mortulite et sir la Population, de la Belgique (Brix. 1832); Stutistique Criminelle de la Belgique (Brux. 1832); Sur l' Homme et Is Deceloppeinent de ses Facultes au Essai de Physique Sociede (Par. 1833); Du SysMine Societe et des Lois qui is yegissent (Par. 1848); and Physique (Brux. 1633). Quete let Nv.s also one of the most efficient collaborateurs in drawing up the Bulletin de la Com mission Ceatrale de Statistique, the Annales des Mines, the Journal des Economistes, the Anuales des 2 'voila Publics, the Trim. National, etc. Ile also published numerous papers on meteorology, astronomy, terrestrial magnetism, etc., iu the Memoires and Bulletins of the Belgian royal academy. He died iu 1874.
