Order 7. Ilaptores.—The members of this order are distinguished by their strong, curved], sharp-edged, and sharp-pointed bills, the upper mandible being the longest, and hooked at the tip. The order is divided into two great sections: nocturnal raptores and diurnal raptores, the first comprising the single family strigicke (q.v.), or owls (q.v.); the second. or diurnais, including two subsections or groups, accipitrinte, comprising the falcons, hawks, and eagles, and the vulturidoe. or vultures. Thc raptores always live iu pairs, and the males and females are said to live together during life, instead of mating every season, like other birds. The female is generally larger than the male, but has, less brilliant plumago.
