CIS-SUTLEJ, a political term applied in British India to the territory south of the Sutlej, occupied by Sikh chiefs during the last years of the Deldi empire, and now including the British districts of Ambala, Ludhitum, Pirozpur, and Hissar, with the native states of Patiala, Faridkot, Maier Kotla, Chitraulit Raikot, Buriya, Mandot, Jheend, and Nabha, which came under British pro tection in 1809. By the treaty with Ranjit Singh, of the 26th April 1809, he undertook not to make or allow any encroachment on the states on the left bank of the Sutlej. In 1849 the British abolished the sovereign powers of the various chieftains. Several states have lapsed to the British.

Patiala was formed by a Jat family of Sikh re ligionists, who emigrated from the Manjah about the early part of the 18th century. The area is 5412 sq. tn., with a population of 1,586,000, and a revenue of Rs. 3,000,000.

Jheend has an area of 1236 sq. rn., and a popula tion of -311,000 souls, with a revenue of fonr laklis of rupees. The maharaja is a Jat of the Sikh faith. 1857 its chief was the lint person who tuarched against the mutiueers at Dehli.

Naha territory has an area of 863 isq. in., a population of 276,000 souls, and a revenue of four lakhs. The chief is of the same stock as the maltarajaa of l'atiala and Jheend, but is the elder , branch of the family. The fantily behartx.1 ill in ' the Sikh war of 1845-4G, but did well in the revolt of 1857, and were rewarded by a grant of land out of the Jhnjjur territory.

Ka/sia territory has an area of 1.55 sq. m., and a population of 62,000 souls, with a revenue of I Rs. 130,000. The family came front the village ' of Kalsia in the Manjah.

Haler Kotla has 156 sq. tn., with a population of 46,200 souls, and a revenue of one laid). The family came originally from Kabul.

Rtridkot consists of Faridkot proper and Kot kupura ; is S.W. of Firozpur, borders to the S.E. on Patiala. It has an area of 643 sq. in., and a population of 51,000 souls, with a revenue of Rs. 75,000. .

Munulote is a Mahomedan chieftaincy, and was re-established in 1863. • The minor Cis-Sutlej chiefs were deprived of their sovereign powers, and the police management of their estates was assumed by the British Go vermnent ;* all customs ditties were abolished, with out compensation, except in the ca.se of the nawab of Konjpura and the mir of Kotahar, and the chiefs were reduced to the rank of ordinary jagliir dars. These were 80 in number, with revenues varying from Rs. 250 to 71,900.-1-nip. Gem.

Cistus creticus, of the Levant, one of the species which afforded Labdatiutb, collected formerly for medical use during the prevalence of the plague, by .whipping the plants with leathern thongs, the resin adhering. to the leathern straps.
