BJORNSON, byorn'sdon, Bjornstjerne, Norwegian novelist, poet and dramatist: b. Kvikne, 8 Dec. 1832; d. 26 April 1910. He entered the University of Christiania in 1852, and he speedily became known as a contributor of articles and stories to newspapers and as a dramatic critic. From 1857 to 1859 he was manager of the Bergen theatre, producing dur ing that time his novel,

prize in literature. In 1880-81 he traveled and lectured in the United States.
