CAVLU'S, COUNT, was born at Paris in 3692. He entered the army in his youth, and made some campaigns in Catalonia and in Germany. After the peace of Itantadt, he turned hie attention entirely to the hire arta, and went to Italy for the purpose of studying them. afterward, went to Constantinople and Asia Minor, and visited the ruins of Ephesus and Colophon. On his return to France, he applied himself to engrave and illustrate the cameos and other stones of the king's cabinet, and to superintend the publication of the fine work, Pierre* gravhe du Cabinet du Bei,' in 2 vols. folio, descriptive of that collection. Ile also published engravings of the medals of the Roman Emperors belonging to the same collection Numismata aura • Impemtonsm Itotnanorum o Cimclio Regis Chrietianisalml.' In 1731 he was made • member of the Academy of Sculpture and Pisintlug, upon which he wrote the live, of the most celebrated painters, and sculptors who bad belonged to that society. He was a warm, and, as far as it was in his power, a liberal promoter of the arta; extremely disinterested himself, ho eought out and assisted indigent talent lie left his rich collection of antiquities to the King's Museum. In 1805 a compilation of memoranda was published, under the title of 'Souvenirs du Comte de Caylus, 2 vole. 12mo.
