LANG, JOHN MARSHALL (1834-). A Scotch Presbyterian minister. born in Glasford. Lanark shire. He was educated at Glasgow University, was appointed to congregations in (1556). Glasgow (1565). and Edinbur7h (1865). but returned t() the Barony Church. Glasgow. in 1573, and in 1900 was made vice-chancellor and principal of Aberdeen University. His principal publications are: Gnostic Sects and Heresies (1573) ; Flearen and Rome (1875) : The Last Supper of Our Lord (18811; Life: Is It Worth Lining? 11SS:31 : A neient Religions of Central arm-rim (1882) : The Church of England (1884): Gideon and the Judges (1890) : The (-1, urrb and the People (1593).

LANG. 15ng. KARL HEINRICH VON (1764 1835). A German historian, horn at Balgheirn. In 1780 he became amanuensis in the library of the Prince of Oettingen-Wallerstein. and in 1782 he entered the University of Altdorf. Three years later at Octtiugen he held various local offices (till 1789), and wrote Beitrage ur Kenntniss der l'crfassung des drtingischcn l'aterlands (1786'). Hardenberg sent him to the Congress

at Rastatt as secretary of legation in 1797. In 1799 be became Councilor of War and of Do mains, and in 1811 was appointed Director of the Government Archives at .1\ lunich. his historical works, which are popular rather than scientific, include: HistorisAr Enticiekclung der deutschen Steucrrcrfassang (1793) ; Annalen des Piirsten tams Ansbach linter der preassischen Regierung (1806•; and Geschichtc der Jesuiten in Bayern (1S19). His other works, Hammelburger Reisen in elf Fahrte-a (last ed. 1322). and Birmanisehes Strafgesetzbach (1822-25). are marked by a sar castic humor, which enters largely even into his Ifemoiren (1842: last ed. 1881).
