MOSER, JOHANN JA Ou ( 1701-85) . A Ger nnin publicist, born in Stuttgart. Ile studied at the Cniversity of Tiibingen, where in 1720 he became professor of law. In consequence of some difficulties with the censor, he resigned this po sition in 1732. and in 1736 answered a call to the Cniyersity of Frankfort-on-the-oder. Here he incurred the displeasure of Frederick William and in 1739 Wa, again compelled to resign. In 1747 he became Privy Councilor and chief of the chancery in the service of the Landgrave of Ilesse Homburg, but two years later he went to Hanau and in 1751 returned to his native city, where he entered the service of the Duke of \Viirttem berg. In 1759, held responsible for certain manifestoes directed against the Duke, he was imprisoned in the fortress of llohentwiel, where he remained for live years. After his release his Mikes were restored to him.
