PHIGALIAN MARBLES. The seulptured frieze taken from the interior of the cella of the temple of Apollo at Phiealia, in Arcadia. in 1-;14, and transferred to the British Museum. It rep resented the contest between the Centaurs and Lapiti:e and the Greeks and Amazons. The temple is situated in the extreme southwest of Arcadia. about four miles front Phiealia. on a terrace On the side of a mountain in a picturesque and wild country. and had been completely for gotten till it was accidentally diseovered in 171;5 loy a French architect. The fallen members lie about the ruin, which seems to have been largely caused by Christian iconoclasm and greed for the metal clautps by which the stones were held. The partial restoration from the existing remains is planned (1903f by the “reek Areh,e(ilie•ical society. The sculptures show great skill and boldness in design. hut the execution is by no means so praiseworthy. as propor tions are often 11:1(1 and the face. dull. As the temple was the work of Ictilllls. the architect of the Parthenon, it is very probable that the sculp tures were designed by all artist, hilt the carving is probably the work of less ex , p(11 eneed Arcadian sculptors. The fragmentary ,eltlianre, on tlue of the promois and opisthodlimos are of rather better workmanship.
