WERNER, AN'FON ALEXANDER VON ( 1843 —). A German illustrator and historical paint er. He was horn at Frankfort-on-the-Oder. and was educated first in Berlin and Karlsruhe. and then in Paris and Italy. His earliest, and per haps his best. work *as in the line of illustra tion. For his friend Victor Scheffel lie illus trated the poems Pratt Arentiare (1863), Juni prras (1805), Gaudramas (18(17), Brrypsalmen (1868), and Der Trompeter run t44rhinfp a. The Iirst of his historieal and genre paintings ap peared in 1865, with "Luther and Cajetanus" and Confidential Interview."
