VAN HISS, CHARLES Ilterwin (1S57—). An American geologist and educator, born at Fulton, lIe graduated at the Ynive•sity of Wis consin in 1879, served successively on its faculty as instructor in chemistry and metallurgy, as sistant professor of metallurgy. professor of metallurgy, professor of metallurgy and petrolo gy, and professor of geology until 1903, when lie was elected president of the university. 11c be came associated with the United States Geo logical Surrey in 1883, thereafter served :is as sistant geologist of the Lake Superior Division (188:3 to 1888), and geologist in charge of the Lake Superior Division (188,8 to 1000), and in 1900 was appointed geologist hi charge of the Division of the Pre-Cambrian and Metamorphic (4eology. In 1897 lie way appointed consulting geologist for thcWisconsinGeological and Natural 'History Survey. He became a member of the Na tional Academy of Sciences. the Scientilie So c•iety of Christiania, and various other scientific associations, and in 1892, upon the foundation of the .lonrna/ of aco/ogy„ was made one of its edi tors. Ilis principal works relate to the geology of the Arch:eat] and Algonkian formations. Ile is a recognized authority of the highest order on American A lgonkin n and Arch:Pan geology, and particularly on the iron-bearing series of the Lake Superior region, on the deposit ion of ores, and on the principles of structural and dynamic geology, as applied to Pre-Cambrian formations.
